Abraham Lincoln elected president of the United States

On this day in 1860, Americans elected as their president Abraham Lincoln, whose victory led to the secession of Southern states and the long and bloody Civil War that lasted until 1865 and ended slavery in the U.S. 1860.

American politician Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin, became the first openly gay person to be elected to the U.S. Senate. 2012. 

U.S. President Ronald Reagan won reelection in a landslide victory over Democratic candidate Walter F. Mondale. 1984.

Ethan Hawke (born November 6, 1970, Austin, Texas, U.S.) is an American actor, director, and novelist best known for his portrayals of cerebral sensitive men.

Hawke, who was raised in New Jersey, began acting while in high school and at age 15 made his film debut in Explorers (1985), playing a teenager who builds a spaceship. In 1988 he enrolled in Carnegie Mellon University to study drama but dropped out after a few months to take a role as a prep school student in Dead Poets Society (1989). The film, which also stars Robin Williams as a charismatic English teacher, was a critical success.
